ACL rehabilitation in Ballarat, without the guesswork

An ACL injury is 9–12 months of decisions. Very few people are given a map — that’s the part we fix first.

“You feel lost”

A diagnosis, a surgery date, and then… not much. No one joining the dots.

“No direction”

Exercises on a sheet with no idea what comes next, or when.

“Unsure of the next step”

Should you have surgery? Is it too early to run? Are you actually ready?

Time out isn’t the same as ready.

01
Pre-hab & early

Before and after surgery — protect the knee and set it up.

02
Real strength

Loaded properly on our performance floor.

03
Run, cut, land

Sport-specific movement rebuilt step by step.

04
Objective testing

Cleared on data, not on a calendar.

Step one · Assessment & diagnosis

Surgery or not? We’ll work through it with you.

Not every ACL needs reconstruction. It depends on your knee, your sport, your age and what you want to get back to — and it’s a decision you shouldn’t have to make alone or in a ten-minute appointment.

We assess the knee properly, explain what we find in plain language, and map out what each path would actually look like for you. If you’re seeing a surgeon, we work alongside them.

What you’ll leave with
A clear diagnosisWhat’s injured, what isn’t, and what it means.
The surgical vs non-surgical pictureThe honest case for each, for your knee and your goals.
A timelineWhat the next 9–12 months look like either way.
A first planWhat to start doing this week — not in six weeks’ time.
Step two · The rehab guide

Five phases, and you always know which one you’re in

You move up when the testing says you’re ready — not when the calendar says so.

01
Site Protection
First ~6 weeks

Respect the graft’s healing time and settle the knee down. Reduce swelling, get full extension back, switch the quad on again and retrain normal walking.

02
Load Introduction
Balance · strength · landing

Rebuild balance, muscle size and strength around the knee — then start reintroducing landing, hopping and running technique drills.

03
Strength Accumulation
First run ~4–5 months

Heavier strength work, lateral movement and single-leg strength. Your first run lands here — once the graft has healed and every phase 1–2 test is ticked off.

Progression test: Under 20% side-to-side · 2× bodyweight mid-thigh pull
04
Training Integration
Back into club training

Build explosive power and reactive strength, then reintegrate into club training within set constraints as you progress.

Progression test: Under 10% side-to-side · single-leg drop jump under 10%
05
Return to Performance
Return to sport

The final dress rehearsal — strength programmed as if you were never injured, club training at or near 100%, then match play.

Progression test: Under 5% side-to-side · 3× bodyweight mid-thigh pull

Ballarat ACL rehabilitation FAQs

How long does ACL rehab take?

Typically 9–12 months from surgery to full contact sport. We stage it and test at each milestone rather than working to a fixed date.

Do you work with my surgeon?

Yes. We follow your surgeon’s protocol and stay in contact throughout so everyone is working from the same plan.

What testing do you use?

Strength, power and symmetry on force plates, plus hop, landing and change-of-direction testing — staged through your rehab so you can see progress.

Can I start before surgery?

Absolutely — and you should. Pre-hab strength is one of the strongest predictors of a good outcome.
